The retirement of 0000

Last week I retired all of Froggie’s 0000 clothes.

:(

Although he has only outgrown a few items, it didn’t seem right to continue to wear the rest of the 0000 clothes, so I decided to retire them all.

:(

I’ve been in denial about his clothing size for about 2 weeks, so I continued to squeeze convince his little legs into his clothes. But when the little buttons look like they’re about to burst open, even I know that’s not a good look. So we’re a little sad that he’s growing so fast.

(No more Froggie in his froggie onesie)

But on the upside, Froggie gets to wear all the new 000 clothes, including his ‘going home’ outfit (which he never wore because it was too big). The red and navy stripes are just darling, don’t cha think?

I also did some clothing retirement of my own too. I retired my Mavi maternity jeans. These are by far the most comfiest, best fitting, perfect length jeans I’ve ever worn. When I first heard that Mavi makes designer maternity jeans, I raced to my closest David Jones to buy a pair. Sure the $169 price tag was NOT appealing, so I decided to ‘just check them out,’ with no intention of purchasing a pair.

To my relief shock surprise, the Mavi maternity jeans were on clearance/sale and I got them for $49! Bargain! I also wasn’t expecting to wear them for very long, as I got them when I was 5 months pregnant, but again to my surprise, I continued to wear them for the rest of the pregnancy. But since I’m not pregnant any more (and haven’t been for the last 10 weeks) I thought it’s time to retire put them on sabbatical until my next pregnancy. See you later soon Mavi maternity jeans!

So since I have a denim deficit in my wardrobe, I need to make everything equal in the world again (yes, this is how a rationalise buying new clothes). I’m just loving all of the coloured denim that is available right now, the brights, the pastels and the earth tones, so this morning I went out and purchased my first pair of coloured denim, in bright blue. I love them!

As soon as I got home, I tried them on for mr gasket, and he liked them too, and said that I should go get another pair in a different colour. Yes please, no need to tell me twice!

Have you got a pair of coloured denim? What colour do you have, and what colour should I buy next?

Pattern Review – Easy peasy baby jacket

Late last year my grandmother came to visit for the arrival of my cousin’s first baby. I was so happy to have her visit, as I hadn’t seen her in three years, and since I was a few weeks pregnant, I was excited to be able to share the news with her in person. Once we announced the pregnancy, my grandmother wasted no time in sourcing needles and wool, and began making a variety of beautiful cardigans/jackets, a pullover, a jumpsuit, and even a teddy bear for Froggie. During her stay, my grandmother and I would sit, knit (I would crochet), and chat, and for the first time in my adult life, I got to have some real special one-on-one time with a grandparent. I loved spending this quality time with her, and look forward to the day that I can do it again. So it was while I watched my grandmother make these woollen items, I decided that I needed to knit something more substantial than just the bubba booties.

I’d read about the Bendigo Woollen Mills on this blog, so I went to their website and bought this awesome baby wool:

And here is what I made:

The pattern is from Patons Quick & Easy Baby Knits #6000 (the only knitting book I own!), and as the title suggests, was very easy. It wasn’t a quick knit for me, but that’s because I am not yet a super fast knitter, but I’m sure I will get there. I just love the stone colour of the wool, and I love how it feels. I added orange buttons to the jacket, as that’s all I had on hand, and I think they look great, adding a pop of colour to the jacket. Here are the details on ravelry. I can’t wait for Froggie to get bigger so that he can wear it, he will be gorgeous in it I’m sure!

When I was at my parent’s house recently, I noticed that one of Mum’s gossip magazines came with a knitting booklet, so I think I’ve found inspiration for my next knitting project!

Pattern Review: Bubba Booties

Recently when someone asked me,

“Have you made anything for the baby yet?”

They were shocked, horrified, appalled, puzzled by my “No” response.

It’s not surprising, I do enjoy making handmade things, and at every single baby shower I’ve ever been to, I have included something handmade. I have wanted to make something for the baby, in fact I’ve been dying to make something, but I’ve just been:

a) distracted by all the other bills purchases for the baby
b) getting bored with gender neutral colours (white, beige, brown)
c) too excited on what to make first
d) all of the above

So since it’s a long weekend, I decided to make some booties from my good ol’ Patons Quick & Easy Baby Knits #6000

And here is the end result:

This was my first time making booties, and I love them! I especially loved making the twisted cord for the ties, they look difficult, but were so simple, I really like how the grey and aqua mesh well together. The booties are imperfect, and mr. gasket says one bootie looks bigger than the other, but even if they are flawed, I still think they are precious.

The grey wool is the Spotlight brand 8 ply pure wool, and the aqua wool is some scrap 8 ply wool I had lying around (possibly Patons?)

I’m so amazed at my awesomeness that I have signed up to ravelry, an online social network of knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners who share their projects, review patterns and give wool help to the needy (yes please!). If you’re already on ravelry, come and be my friend, I’m gasketsforgirlies.

Anyway, here is another picture of the booties.

(This picture does make one look bigger than the other)

P.S. on a silly side note, my theme song while knitting this project was Flo Rida “Turn Around (5 4 3 2 1)”. Leave me a comment if you can guess why!
